The inside sports hall of Vann Molyvann’s most treasured building, the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh. Vann Molyvann was born November 23, 1926 in Kampot Province and is Cambodia’s most renowned modern architect. Between 1955 and 1970 Prince Norodom Sihanouk began a development policy encompassing the whole of the kingdom with the construction of new towns, infrastructure and architecture of the highest standard. Molyvann was the most talented of Khmer architects who contributed to the unique and authentic style of architecture that emerged during this era and that has been coined New Khmer Architecture. Studying in Paris, France, he gave up a law degree and switched to architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Paris (Ecole Nationale SupŽrieure des Beaux-Arts). He studied in the Arretche studio and returned to Cambodia in 1956, the first fully qualified Cambodian architect.
